Why do we roll our eyes or simply tune out when the word ‘welfare’ is mentioned?
Have you even got this far? Or did you see the word WELFARE and move on to the next item? If you are still reading, I thank you. Welfare quite simply is a combination of two words. Well and Fare. It means faring well, a persons state of physical, spiritual, moral and social wellbeing; whether you are experiencing good or bad fortune. How well we fare will depend on how organised we are and whether we embrace this aspect of the gospel or treat it like it is something we all know about but no one mentions in polite conversation.
Be brave, be daring, be outrageous even and embrace welfare as more than just a word. One day it may just be that rainy day your Mother told you to prepare for. Even if you never need or use your preparedness plan, you still need to have it or the Lord would not have asked us to do it. In my experience the Lord has never asked us to do something without a principle behind it. Something for our… dare I say it…welfare.
What if Noah had decided to sell umbrellas instead of building an ark?
72-hour packs: During and after Hurricane Katrina people were frantically trying to find their loved ones. ‘Have you seen a little girl with blue eyes and blonde hair?” How many blonde blue-eyed girls are out there? Millions. Consider adding to your packs a t-shirt of bright and distinctive colour. A few sizes too large for the children so it lasts a few years. Have your family photo printed up on it and each person has his or her own name printed as well. That way in an emergency it will be easier for you to locate each other by your t-shirts and it will make reuniting children to their parents easier if there is a photo to go by.
Water storage: As you finish your juice and cordial bottles give them a good clean out and refill them with tap water. Clearly label the bottles as non-purified tap water and the date you filled them. Store them at the back of a cupboard. Continue to store drinkable water elsewhere. But in the event of your water being shut off for some reason you have water to wash and flush with, without using your drinking water supply.
We each of us have a handy hint or great idea when it comes to the many aspects of preparedness, please share your ideas with us so we can learn from each other and utilise the skills we all have. Email or hand your ideas and thoughts to Sister Georgia Brain, don’t be shy, no one will point and whisper that you are a closet welfare addict. Your brilliant idea and suggestion may be just what a new member or even an old member needs to get them going.
Until next week remember it is good to be a food storing, wheat grinding, powdered milk using, water storing, 72-hour pack toting Latter Day Saint.
Yours in preparedness
Georgia
